Dr. Norman Geisler would often say to staff at Southern Evangelical Seminary that nobody embodied more of his legacy than his student, Dr. Richard Howe. In honor of both that legacy and Dr. Geisler’s directive to safeguard the mission and trajectory of the seminary, SES has named Dr. Howe as Provost and appointed him to the Norman L. Geisler Chair of Christian Apologetics.
Dr. Richard G. Howe, who in recent years served as Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Apologetics at SES, will assume his new role as SES Provost on May 1, 2021. Dr. Howe is a writer as well as a public speaker and debater in churches, conferences, and university campuses on issues concerning Christian apologetics and philosophy. Dr. Howe is Past President of the International Society of Christian Apologetics, has presented at the annual meeting of the Evangelical Philosophical Society, and has interacted with leading Christian thinkers like William Lane Craig, Hugh Ross, Greg Koukl, and Frank Turek.
Dr. Howe is also co-author with SES co-founder Dr. Norman L. Geisler of The Religion of the Force and is a contributor to several books including Answering the Music Man: Dan Barker’s Arguments Against Christianity; The Harvest Handbook of Apologetics; The Harvest Handbook of Faith and Science (forthcoming); Introduction to God’s Revelation (DVD and workbook); Am Put Here for the Defense of the Gospel: Dr. Norman L. Geisler: A Festschrift in His Honor; The Jesus Quest: The Danger from Within; The Popular Encyclopedia of Apologetics; Reasons for Faith: Making a Case for the Christian Faith; and To Everyone an Answer: A Case for the Christian Worldview, as well as numerous journal publications. He has spoken and/or debated in churches and universities in the US and Canada as well as Europe and Africa on issues relating to the defense of the Christian faith.
SES President Judge Philip Ginn stated, “Our plan all along was to bring Dr. Howe’s leadership full-time to SES. Dr. Howe will now be the seminary’s chief academic officer and responsible for the creation and implementation of the academic priorities for the seminary and for the allocation of resources that will support those priorities.”
Judge Ginn further shared, “Richard and I have been friends for years. When I graduated from SES in 2010, Dr. Howe was one of the readers on my doctoral project. I am greatly looking forward to teaming with him, and his being Provost will provide that opportunity to advance SES in a way that is unique due to our closeness and friendship.”
In response to being named Provost, Dr. Howe stated, “I am excited and honored almost beyond words to be back full-time with SES as Provost and seated in the Norman L. Geisler Chair of Christian Apologetics. While the seminary continued to graciously afford me the opportunity for teaching over these past few years, I’m looking forward to taking it to the next level as we all work together at SES in carrying on the legacy of our co-founders, Ross Rhoads and Norman Geisler, by training men and women for the evangelization of the world and defense of the historic Christian faith.”
